2017 is the final airshow season for the current Belgian air force F-16 display pilot Tom “Gizmo” De Moortel and his aircraft “Blizzard”.
Tom is a member of 31 tiger squadron based at Kleine-Brogel and took part in all major Belgian air force operations since he entered the air force, both at home and abroad. In recent years, his already busy schedule became even more burdened with the addition of his activities as display pilot, on top of his active squadron duties.
This saw him crisscrossing Europe during the summer months, acting as ambassador of the Belgian air force.
The F-16 entered service with the Belgian air force in 1979 and is still the sharp end of the spear thanks to numerous upgrades. It has a powerful engine and is extremely agile. It can perform a wide range of missions thanks to the variety of ordinance it can carry, both air-to-air and air-to-ground. In a few years’ time, the airframes will reach the end of their life-cycle though, which means the search for a replacement is actively on-going.
Don’t miss your chance to wave Gizmo goodbye during his display at Sanicole!
