The name of the father of the mythological ancient Greek gods, Zeus, is an appropriate name for the most advanced combat aircraft in the inventory of the Hellenic air force. The F-16C Block52+ variant of the Greek air force has an upgraded engine compared to earlier F-16 variants and also features conformal fuel tanks for increased range.
This makes it one of the most advanced F-16s in the world. The aircraft is painted in a striking livery, turning it into a wonderful ambassador of the Hellenic air force in Greece and abroad.
The F-16 is tasked with the protection of Greek airspace, but is equally at home in the air-to-ground role and anti-shipping missions.
The solo demonstration team Zeus started out in 2009. All team members come from the base of Chania on the island of Crete. The demonstration lasts about 12 minutes and shows off the agility of the F-16 with forces of over 9G.
This marks the debut of the Hellenic air force at the International Sanicole Airshow.
