Perhaps the best-known fighter from the Second World War, definitely in Europe, is the Supermarine Spitfire. The Spitfire grew out of a racing seaplane designed by RJ Mitchell.

It flew faster than contemporary fighters in the Royal Air Force so it was ideal to take on German escort fighters while Hurricanes went after German bombers during the Battle of Britain. Later on, numerous Marks were developed from the early Spitfires. The Spitfire of the Royal Netherlands Air Force Historic Flight is the ultimate version with the Merlin engine, the Mk IX.
