Recently, Cargolux decided to station AT-802 firefighting aircraft at Zwartberg. During the 2025 International Sanicole Airshow, you will be able to witness this amazing sight performed by another type, and it even has a strong link to the Vietnam war: The Conair Turbo Firecat.
This impressive aircraft has a fascinating history. Originally designed as the Grumman S-2 Tracker, a carrier-based anti-submarine warfare aircraft for the US Navy and Royal Canadian Navy in the 1950s, it played a crucial role in Cold War naval operations, even flying from the Dutch aircraft carrier Karel Doorman. The Tracker was also active during the Vietnam war as an airborne early warning and control aircraft (AWACS) with the United States Navy.
During the 1970s, many of these robust aircraft have been transformed into the formidable Firecat firefighter with two powerful turobprop engines. Prepare to be amazed as this iconic machine thunders across the sky, then dramatically descends to unleash a torrent of water in a stunning display of aerial firefighting capability. Feel the rush as over 3200 liters of water cascade below, showcasing the vital role these aircraft play in protecting our landscapes. The French Sécurité Civile Turbo Firecats were retired in 2020. The aircraft that will display over the Sanicole airfield is part of the Amicale Alençonnaise des Avions Anciens.
Don't miss this awe-inspiring demonstration of a unique capability for the first time in 40 years at the International Sanicole Airshow!
