Operated by the German armed forces since 1972, the CH-53 has been the backbone of Germany's heavy-lift helicopter fleet for more than five decades. Built under licence in Germany from the renowned American Sikorsky design, this powerful helicopter has continuously evolved through extensive upgrades to its avionics, navigation systems, and communications, ensuring it remains ready for the demanding missions of today.
Designed to move what others can't, the CH-53 excels in tactical and strategic airlift, transporting troops, vehicles, and vital supplies wherever they're needed. Its versatility extends far beyond transport duties, supporting medical evacuations, search and rescue operations, humanitarian relief, disaster response, and special operations. With its spacious cabin and impressive lifting capacity, the CH-53 can carry dozens of fully equipped soldiers or sling heavy cargo beneath the aircraft, making it an indispensable asset in the most challenging environments.
Throughout its distinguished career, the German CH-53 has served on numerous international deployments, including peacekeeping and stabilization missions in the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Mali, as well as humanitarian operations following natural disasters. Although the German armed forces are gradually introducing the new CH-47F Chinook to succeed the fleet, the CH-53 remains an iconic aircraft whose legacy is defined by strength, reliability, and remarkable versatility.
This year, the German military is bringing two of these massive flying legends to the static park. One will even wear a special livery to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the German air force.
