Royal Netherlands Historic Flight

The popular and renowned Royal Netherlands Historic Flight are welcome guests at our airshow with their pristine classic aircraft. This year they will bring two of their best-known airframes.

The first is the legendary Spitfire MkIX, arguably the most famous European fighter during the Second World War. This elegant aircraft which combined the power of the fabulous Rolls Royce Merlin engine with a revolutionary wing design became arguably the most successful aircraft in Europe in the first half of the Second World War, flown by airmen from across the continent to fight off the axis powers. It later went on to serve with several airforces after the war, including the Royal Netherlands air force and indeed it was also the first fighter of the Belgian air force.

The second aircraft is the brutish B-25 Mitchell medium-bomber, a twin-engined design of manufacturer North American. One of its most impressive feats was the Doolittle raid from the US carrier Hornet on the Japanese capital Tokyo, but it also served extensively in Western Europe. A mainly Dutch squadron which also included Belgian crews in the RAF was based at Melsbroek in Belgium in 1944 so this capable aircraft has a clear link with Belgium.
