It would be impossible to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United States Air Force without its most famous Second World War fighter: the P-51 Mustang. The Mustang was capable of escorting allied bombers all the way to and from their target. This increased the bombers’ survival chances immensely and was a vital step in gaining air superiority.

The P-51 was developed at the request of the Royal Air Force by aircraft manufacturer North-American. The first version was powered by an Allison engine but this did not prove a great success story. Only when they fitted the Rolls Royce Merlin engine did the Mustang come into its own and could it grow to become the legendary fighter we now know. The aircraft stayed in service after the war and saw limited service in the Korean War. The aircraft taking part in the International Sanicole Airshow belongs to the Vintage Dream Factory and can be flown by both the pilot and passenger as it has dual controls. Interested audience members can also go for a flight with this aircraft, which wears the colours of the American ace major Robin Olds.
