Belgian Air Force F-35 Lightning II
The Belgian air force is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2026. Throughout its history it has adapted to changing circumstances and one of the most high-profile changes this century will be on display at the 2026 International Sanicole Airshow during the weekend of 12-13 September with the first appearance over the airfield at Hechtel-Eksel of the new fifth generation fighter of the Belgian air force entering service now: the Lockheed-Martin F-35 Lightning II.
For more than four decades, the legendary General Dynamics F 16 Fighting Falcon has protected Belgian skies since entering service in 1979, building a reputation for excellence across countless NATO operations. As these iconic jets approach the end of their distinguished careers, a new era is taking flight.
Stepping forward is the F-35 Lightning II, a revolutionary aircraft that represents a giant leap in technology and capability. With its fully integrated sensor suite, the pilot receives unmatched awareness of the digital battlefield. Its advanced stealth design makes it exceptionally difficult to detect on radar, while internally carried weapons maintain the aircraft’s sleek, aerodynamic profile.
Belgium will operate 34 F-35s, with 11 additional aircraft likely to follow, equipping squadrons at Florennes Air Base and Kleine Brogel Air Base. This cutting-edge fighter ensures Belgium remains a key contributor to NATO operations for decades to come.
At the International Sanicole Airshow, visitors will witness a Belgian F-35 from Florennes perform an exciting fly-by, offering a rare glimpse of the aircraft in action. As they power through the sky, you won’t just see the future of Belgian airpower. You’ll feel it, as the thunderous roar of the engine echoes across the airfield.
Admire the future of the Belgian air force when the Belgian F-35 makes it highly anticipated debut at the International Sanicole Airshow 2026.
