12 & 13 SEPTEMBER 2026 - Sanicole Airfield (Hechtel-Eksel)

NH-90NFH Search & Rescue

Belgium

Prepare for a powerful and atmospheric demonstration of one of the most vital missions flown by the Belgian Air Force. When the spotlight turns to this helicopter, the crowd will witness a dramatic glimpse into real-world life-saving operations at sea: the NH90 Cayman.

Modern air forces rely on helicopters as their multi-tool in the sky. Belgium’s fleet of NHIndustries NH90 helicopters once included both the NFH (NATO Frigate Helicopter) and TTH (Tactical Transport Helicopter) variants, supporting missions ranging from search and rescue to troop transport, medical evacuation, and anti-submarine warfare. While the TTH has now retired from service, the naval NH-90 NFH continues to play a critical role in Belgium’s defence and maritime operations.

During the flying display, visitors will witness the NH-90 NFH in action performing a simulated search-and-rescue mission. For many spectators, the scene will feel familiar. These distinctive grey helicopters, operated by 40 Squadron from Koksijde Air Base, have long been a reassuring sight along the Belgian coastline, regularly launching on real rescue missions to aid people in distress at sea.

Built for demanding naval environments, the NH-90 NFH is a technological powerhouse. Equipped with fly-by-wire flight controls, advanced sensors, and cutting-edge avionics, it can hunt submarines, track surface threats, and operate from the decks of frigates. Belgian NH-90s regularly deploy aboard Belgian and Dutch warships, extending the reach of their host vessels with surveillance, targeting capabilities, and additional firepower. Their operational experience even includes escort missions in the Red Sea protecting international shipping from the threat posed by Houthi attacks.

The future of Belgium’s maritime helicopter force is also evolving. While the NH-90 NFH fleet will continue to operate from frigates, the long and proud search-and-rescue tradition at Koksijde Air Base will continue with a new dedicated SAR helicopter currently being selected.

This demonstration at the International Sanicole Airshow at Hechtel-Eksel, Belgium, offers a rare chance to see one of Belgium’s most capable helicopters up close in the air, recreating the dramatic missions that unfold over the North Sea. Do not miss this thrilling display of technology, teamwork, and lifesaving aviation during the weekend of 12-13 September 2026.
