Get ready for a breathtaking display of precision flying and aerial artistry at the International Sanicole Airshow 2025 as the Royal Navy sends its flagship helicopter display team: the Black Cats.
The distinctive "Black Cats" moniker has a fascinating dual origin, deeply rooted in Royal Navy heritage. Firstly, it pays homage to the fierce wildcat depicted on the emblem of the now-disbanded 702 Naval Air Squadron, an early operator of the Lynx helicopter and the former mount of the team. Secondly, it incorporates the naval slang term "blackcatting," which describes the art of one-upmanship, a friendly rivalry to outperform and excel.
The Black Cats currently showcase the formidable capabilities of the Agusta-Westland Wildcat HMA2 helicopter. This state-of-the-art, multi-role maritime attack helicopter is at the forefront of modern naval aviation. Designed for operations from the decks of frigates and destroyers, the Wildcat is a versatile and powerful aircraft, capable of undertaking a wide range of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, reconnaissance, and utility roles. In the hands of the Black Cats' highly skilled pilots, the Wildcat transforms into an agile performer, demonstrating incredible manoeuvres and close formation flying that highlight its exceptional power and manoeuvrability.
The Black Cats are based at Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton in Somerset, the spiritual home of the Fleet Air Arm. The dedicated pilots and ground crew are primarily drawn from 825 Naval Air Squadron, part of the Wildcat Maritime Force. These individuals are all volunteers, undertaking their display duties in addition to their operational roles, a testament to their commitment and passion for aviation.
Don't miss the opportunity to witness the Royal Navy Black Cats, an exhilarating display of naval power, precision, and pride that will leave you in awe during the International Sanicole Airshow, held over the weekend of 13 & 14 September at Hechtel-Eksel in Limburg, Belgium.
